Our popular Introduction to Paddleboarding course is designed to give you the confidence to paddle independently.

This course includes both fundamental personal paddling and safety & rescue skills. On completion you will be able to paddle efficiently and effectively in a range of conditions. You’ll leave equipped with skills to ensure your own safety and that of others, and with appropriate rescue skills to help yourself and others in difficulty. 

We find people tend go on to buy their own kit, paddle with friends, organise their own trips, and train as instructors.

What is the Introduction to Paddleboarding Course?

Previously known as 'SUP Fundamentals', this course is perfect for anyone wanting to learn to Paddleboard properly, progress their technique or prepare for independent SUP adventures. Across a full practical day on Bristol Harbour, you will learn safe, efficient paddling skills with friendly, expert guidance.

Who can take part in the Introduction to Paddleboarding Course?

This course is ideal for adults and young people aged 14+. No previous experience is required, although having tried Paddleboarding once or twice can be helpful. It is designed for anyone who wants to paddle confidently, safely and independently.

How does the Paddleboarding Course work?

You will meet your SUP Bristol instructor on the harbourside in the heart of Bristol's floating harbour. After a warm welcome and safety briefing, you will be fitted with a buoyancy aid, leash and high-quality paddleboard. Throughout the day, you will take part in practical coaching sessions that build your skills step by step and prepare you for real-world paddling.

The day includes:

  • Developing foundational Paddleboarding skills
  • Improving balance, technique and board control
  • Understanding weather, tides and harbour conditions
  • Rescue basics and how to support fellow paddlers
  • Planning and preparing for your own SUP adventures

Where does the Paddleboarding Course take place?

This course takes place on Bristol Harbour (BS1 6XG), a sheltered urban waterway that offers the perfect environment for learning and practising new SUP skills. Indoor changing, toilets and hot showers are available onsite.

Important Information

  • Paddleboarding is an all-weather outdoor activity. Please check the forecast and dress appropriately - prepare to get wet!
  • We suggest bringing quick-drying clothing you don't mind getting wet, as well as old trainers or water shoes.
  • All equipment is provided, including paddleboard, leash and buoyancy aid.
